PhD student Ariel Pernela is presenting a poster at the Spring ACS conference. She'll be talking about her work in the McCall lab focused on understanding the immune factors that regulate metabolism during Trypanosoma cruzi parasite infection. This work should lead to new avenues to mitigate the health effects of infectious diseases.

Though the 2025 SDSU Student Symposium wrapped up over the weekend, we wanted to take a moment to celebrate some of the exceptional students from the Gu lab who presented last week - keep in mind if you are heading to the ACS Spring Meeting in a couple weeks you'll be able to see some of these students there as well! Deren Qian is a high school student who has been working in the Gu lab for two years. He did a great job at S3 and will plan to present his research at ACS meeting-San Diego soon! Congratulation to Evan Ji, another high school student in the Gu group who present his research at S3! It's not all high school students in the Gu lab, Claire Baeriswyl, a senior undergraduate student at SDSU, was also presenting at S3. Claire has accomplished a great deal and has gone through a lot, she is a warrior in life and will start her graduate school journey next year! Last but not least, Gonto Johns deserves special recognition for his helpful guidance in assisting Dr. Gu in the mentorship of these amazing students.

The Harrison Lab will be well represented at Pittcon this week. Doctoral students Jessica Torres and Ellen Kuang will each be giving poster presentations on their latest work. In the 10 am session Jessica will present her use of deep eutectic solvents in the search for chemical traces of extraterrestrial life! In the 1 pm session Ellen will present her work exploring lipidomic changes in gut bacteria exposed to oral contraceptives!

You'll see posters on how mutant IDH1 affects metabolic pathways in cells from Brittany, Grace, and Katelyn, and detailing new structural and kinetic features of IDH1 and IDH2 from Elene, Nini, Darius, and Isabella...and you'll hear talks from Aaron, Josselyn, and Sean addressing new protein expression strategies and characterization of new IDH mutants! (You'll also catch Christal giving the keynote at the awards ceremony the following week, but mostly she'll be spending S3 being so proud of the hard work from her student colleagues!)
